Music day

•May 17, 2009 • Leave a Comment

I’ve been cleaning my apartment today and while doing so I discover some new music:

Q-tip, the Renaissance (last years news I know). Nowadays, hip-hop albums very very rarely feel classic and memorable as albums themselves. This is the first real exception for me in a long time. Redman’s Red Gone Wild is the latest coming to mind, but Q-Tip’s album feels like a total classic just after one listening (RGW took maybe 3, before I came to the realization). Really the only track I feel like skipping is the monotone and boring “Life is Better”.

Also, I heard “City Lights” and “A-yo” of the upcoming Blackout 2. This was AWESOME stuff, I’m totally hyped to hear the rest. UGK is most def crazy good when they get it right (RIP Pimp C).

I have this really good feeling of my hip-hop interest skyrocketing again after finding UGK and the new tracks and albums above.

Is Madlab a Super Shinobi fan?

Man.. He sampled “Silence night” from the Super Shinobi (aka Revenge of Shinobi) soundtrack by Yuzo Koshiro!

Listen to the track “Blast” on his new J Dilla tribute!

Am I a total retard for spotting this a mile a way? I want to see some Rockman/Megaman, metroid and Castlevania samples :P

Also the track “Detroit Playaz” uses some of the same exact sound samples as my favorite radio shows at Sherdog (“It’s that wot’woot” and “vowoooh”).

Madlib is all over the place!!

Ett stort TACK till Bob och David!

I love eBay.

Today I watched a Ikaruga poster go for $111.42.. link

Sure it was nice:

So I thought I’d get it for $20… Man, I feel stupid. But then again I won a Jap GameCube for about $23 complete in very good shape (with component output too!).

eBay is all about action. Let’s see if I get this one some day:

$33.56 feels a little bit too nasty though.

Favorite fighters. Win or lose.

•December 11, 2007 • Leave a Comment

This weekend the subject of ‘favorite fighters’ came up and I really couldn’t answer the question or even make a top 5 without feeling like I was talking out of my rear. So here it is. Of course I’ve probably missed a few and these kind of things change every once in a while. I’ll only comment the top 5.

Doing this list I just asked myself, who would I watch win or lose just because I like them?

20. Gilbert Melendez
19. BJ Penn
18. Thiago Alves
17. Joe Lauzon
16. Shinya Aoki
15. Mauricio Rua
14. Frank Shamrock
13. Jerome Le Banner
12. Josh Barnett
11. Fedor Emelianenko
10. Forrest Griffin
9. Rich Franklin
8. Clay Guida
7. Hayato Sakurai
6. Ronaldo de Souza (‘Jacare’)

5. Amar Suloev. The Russian striker has had some ups and down in his career but VERY few fighters looks like a cunning Russian striking killer the way that he does. A true old school Vale Tudo fighter that goes for the kill with every blow he throws.

4. Anderson Silva. He has been so insanely exciting lately, even more than before his UFC career. Got to show some love for the Middleweight Champ!

3. Wanderlei Silva. Man.. The first time I saw him he really looked like an axe murderer vs Kanehara. He was an instant favorite and I will always love him for all the joy he’s been giving me from the very beginning I started to watch MMA.

2. George St Pierre. I don’t really remember when I first really took notice of GSP’s greatness, it might have been when he looked incredible vs Hughes the first time. Or when he handled Sean Sherk like it was nothing. I hope he blesses my NYE with a wonderful performance in the rubber match.

1. Mac Danzig. No question when I really thought about it. I was totally in love with him on the show, sure he was grumpy and whatever, but he was always aware of it and I totally respected his opinions. His ocregister blogs were also the funniest and best writings I’ve seen any fighter do. He is the only fighter I know of that I really can identify with. Being a vegan (I am as you might know a vegetarian myself) and when he came out to ‘Army of the Pharaohs’ by Jedi Mind Tricks during the TUF finale, that was just to much.. I listened to that track (and the whole album) earlier the same day! *heart*

Here’s some articles that the haters at fightlinker has on him, funny stuff!:

A sad day for MMA

•December 2, 2007 • 2 Comments

Fight network reports that yesterday the Harris County Medical Examiner’s office officially confirmed that Sammy Vasquez passed away this Friday (30/11). Sammy was a MMA fighter out of Texas who got knocked out in the third round in a local regulated promotion. He is the first MMA-fighter to die resulting from a regulated fight, so this is indeed a very sad day for us fans of this sport.

Hughes vs GSP

•November 25, 2007 • Leave a Comment

OMG, I can not f*ckin wait!

Serra is out due to a back injury suffered in training. So now George steps in for a interim title fight! That means 5 rounds of action with two super athletes in Matt Hughes and George St. Pierre.

Now I really hope that GSP gets all the training he needs for a war with Hughes in these 5 weeks. Matt hasn’t really looked good recently in any way really (not fighting nor coaching) but you can never count the most dominant champion in MMA history out.

The winner gets to fight for the title in Montreal vs Serra in ‘08, so this is a huge risk the UFC is making. I mean do they want to headline a Hughes vs Serra match in Montreal? Most likely not. What I like though is that Zuffa is making the very best out of this situation.

Prediction: GSP by disqualification (for Hughes taking ‘time out’) Round 2

right, square in the nuts

The strange event that was Bisping vs Evans.

Frank Edgar vs Spencer Fisher. My pick: Edgar by decision. I was expecting a ground war and a game with knees vs takedowns but during the whole match it looked like Fisher just didn’t get into his usual groove. Disappointing indeed, even though I was super impressed that Edgar dominated someone THAT good.

Ed Herman vs Joe Doerksen. My pick: Doerksen by sub R1. Someone needs to give Joe better advice next time he faces a wrestler.. Joe has the edge on the mat and on the feet IMO but the transitions are the only thing Ed is really good at, so I wonder why Joe did try so hard to get on top when that is the only position that is really hard for him to get on Ed. This match-up did definitely had it’s moments though. It was the one of two match on the PPV I got excited for. Joe had Ed’s back for a while in round 2 after getting dominated in the first. And the Canadian almost sealed it with a super slick triangle chOke, it was a beautiful setup after Ed whiffed a punch in guard. I was really bumped to see Ed KO his foe in the last 5 minutes. (MMAWeekly reports that Joe Doerkson suffers a broken orbital bone. Get well soon Joe!)

Karo Parisyan vs Ryo Chonan. My pick: Parisyan by decision. Other letdown.. Karo edges Ryo in the grappling and wins this uneventful match.

Thiago Silva vs Houston Alexander. My pick: Silva by sub R1. This was the second fight that got me going! I was really looking for Houston to get beaten in this match-up. I never gave him a chance vs Jardine and I thought Sakara would school him in London. Silva looked good vs the over-hyped Alexander. Rogan said about Houston “If this guy touches you, then you are going to be in some SERIOUS trouble”. I hope I am not the only one tired of this kind of overhype..

Rashad Evans vs Michael Bisping. My pick: Evans by TKO R3. I missed some of round 1&2 so I won’t comment to much on this match. Round 3 had a somewhat tired Rashad, who maybe had done a little better after 15 minutes than his foe but only slightly though. Nothing special in this match-up.. The commentating about how tired Rashad was hilarious! Ask Rashad if he was about fall over at any time and just die out of exhaustion..

Joe Lauzon vs Jason Reinhardt. My pick: Joe by KO R1. Man, Jason had the funniest style I’ve seen in a long time. Talk about a savage beast! Had Joe lost this one… Anyways it’s starting with Jason barraging full steam and Joe sidestepping, it ends up on the floor and Joe applies the RNC for the win. PLEASE have Jason back for the sole purpose of our amusement.

Prelims:

Akihiro Gono vs. Tamden McCrory. My pick: Gono by decision. Some nice back and forth action! McCrory looked awesome in the first vs the notorious slow starting Gono. He dominated the Japanese with punches and knees from the clinch by using his superior length. Akihoro looked unfazed though and took the enemy down late during the first 5 minutes. McCrory looked like he changed his plan for the next round and didn’t do much. Gono got the contest to the hit the floor again and had bad intentions when he moved into the mount. The local kid got on the worse end trying to escape an armbar attempt and Gono got an flashy submission win (and the submission of the night bonus, $55000 btw).

Slick *ss sub!

Marcus Aurelio vs. Luke Caudillo. My pick: Aurelio by decision. Marcus looked totally different the second time in the octagon, not having to worry about first-time jitters and sprawling takedowns from “the carpenter”. I was glad to see the American top team-prospect stop Luke late in the opening round via TKO.

Thiago Alves vs. Chris Lytle. My pick: Alves by decision. Saving the best for last! Man this was an awesome fight with two different stand-up styles clashing. It didn’t look like Alves had much of an offensive plan at the beginning so we were left with Chris doing all the offense for the first 90 secs before Thiago got a flash knock down. Thiago chose to feel Chris out for another 2.5 mins and fireman puts the heat on the ATT-member until the firepower starts going two-ways. Alves starts to get this match going for real and the anticipation is high for the next round.
OMG, guess what? The next round is better than the whole PPV together. From the corner Alves comes out with beautiful low kicks and Chris with sharp hands. The battle is ON and it goes back and forth the whole round with really really nasty kicks from Alves that has Chris limping half way into the round. Chris uses one of my faorite Muay Thai techniques in the straight stop kick vs Alves leg kick (which is poorly displayed below) with only seconds left on the clock. Lytle suffered a cut above the eye in round 1 which got nastier during round 2 and the doctor choses to hinder the veteran to continue. Alves wins by TKO (doc stoppage). DAAAMN.

klocka!

To summarize the card, it looked very nice on paper but I’ve got to say that this was a rather lack-luster show. The two best matches were not shown, I guess the UFC had less luck that so many matches went to decision, as Lytle and Alves match-up was definitely the best on the card.

Now the next UFC looks awesome do far with:

-Matt Serra vs. Matt Hughes

-Chuck Liddell vs. Wanderlei Silva

-Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou vs. Lyoto Machida

And the return of Manny Gamburyan!

Last night’s StrikeForce thoughts

•November 17, 2007 • 2 Comments

The broadcast started of at 05:00 my time, streamed live and free on YahooSports! Love these streams and they even work on a Mac! :P

Sooo the big thing this even event had was the 185-pound tourney with Trevor Prangley, Jorge Santiago, Falaniko Vitale and alternate Sean Salmon. Not anything smoking but fun to watch for sure and live MMA is nothing common over here. I REEAALLY expected Prangley. I was far off on this one though.. We got to know the match-ups at the weigh-ins yesterday, which pitted Prangley and Vitale against each other and Salmon with Santiago.

First match was Salmon and Santiago. The Brazilian anticipated a takedown and countered with a flying knee. Salmon got knocked out coooold. Almost Irvin vs Martin-esque. “Great way” to start things off.

Vitale picked Prangley APART on the feet something I really wasn’t expecting. I really believed Vitale was going to be a step down. He proved me wrong and won the first round convincingly. Round 2 was unfortunate as Vitale got poked in the eye and couldn’t continue.

Bobby Southworth vs Anthony Ruiz was next in a non-title affair. Bobby is their 205-pound champion and Ruiz was going to be a showcase fight for their champion. After a dominating first round for Bobby, he overcommits and gets tagged by 3-4 shots on the chin. Bobby is a tough motherf’er for not going down but gets taken down as he backed against the cage. Referee breaks them to check the cut and Ruiz is declared the winner. What did we learn in Pride? Non-title fights suck ASS.

Another upset was coming my way when Paul Buentello and Alistair Overeem squared off in the cage in a non-non-title fight. Overeem has looked like crap lately as soon as the cards are stacked against him but in this fight this never occurred and he totally crushed Paul in the first round. Paul had NO offense.. Wicked. Alistair had takedown, a zillion guillotine attempts and set-ups, knees and punches. In the second round Paul comes out looking good. I expected Alistair to be gassed by now and let Paul go with his hands but the Dutchman double-legs and knocks Paul out with a crushing knee from the clinch after Paul managed to stand up. Alistair Overeem is the new StrikeForce HW-champ.

This card was quite shocking to me at this point and one of the two matches I got right was fluke-ish to say the least. Now I saw a pick yesterday from the weigh-ins and thought I saw Jerry Millen with a mic on there. Thinking ‘Naw, that can’t be him. He shouldn’t even have a job in this business’, I was surprised to see Mr. Millen announce the Gilbert Melendez vs Josh Thompson.. Now WHAT THE HELL is Jerry doing in StrikeForce? The guy responsible for Pride firing Stephan Quadros and making Bas Rutten and Mauro Ranello resign from their broadcast duties, is now in StrikeForce.. I can not explain how retarded it is for a promoter to hire him. Maybe he is responsible for the non-title ideas. He looked like sh*t too. \end{hating} Maybe it was better that he announced it than Frank Shamrock (as he called Josh the first openly gay MMA-fighter :P )

Santiago looked impressive against Prangley. The match was rather quick with a few knees from Santiago and a punch which all looked totally unprotected by Trevor. Santiago looks really good and I understand why he beat Andrei Semonov in St.Petersburg this april (my first MMA-show live BTW).

Main event was Cung Le vs Sam Morgan. Great fight where we finally got to see some of Le’s ground game. Le dominated with kicks and took crucifix-position a few time on Sammy. In the second a kick to the liver ended the fight in Cung’s favor. A challenge between Shamrock and Le was addressed afterwards and both accepted!! (I’m pulling for Cung in this match-up)

*Update* Sean Salmon seems to have some medical problems. His career might be in jeopardy..
